What Vizag parents often notice first

There is no single sign of autism, and every child is different. Families usually come to us after noticing some of these:

  • Talking later than other children, or losing words they once used
  • Not answering to their name and seldom pointing to share interest
  • Keeping to themselves at playtime or in class
  • Lining up or spinning toys, rocking, or flapping hands
  • Meltdowns when plans or routines change
  • Discomfort with loud sounds, bright light, certain foods or fabrics

Our assessment process in Seethammadara

We take a full developmental history from you, observe how your child plays, communicates and connects with people, and use standardised assessment tools such as ISAA, CARS, ADOS and Conners, among others as applicable. With your consent, school observations are included too, so the picture is complete.

Autism can sit alongside ADHD, anxiety, sleep problems or speech delay. Our child psychiatrist checks for these, so the plan supports your child as a whole rather than focusing on a single label.

The first appointment

A specialist will hear your concerns, ask about pregnancy, milestones, health and routines at home, and spend time with your child. Bring any earlier reports, hearing results, videos of behaviour that concerns you, and school feedback. You will know by the end whether a full assessment is advised and what it will involve. Each appointment is typically 45 minutes, and you do not need a referral.

The full assessment generally takes one or two visits, after which we explain your child's strengths and needs and share a written plan.

Therapies we may recommend

Every plan is personal, and we review goals with you at regular intervals. It may involve:

  • Speech and language therapy, including picture-based or gesture communication
  • Occupational therapy for sensory issues, motor skills and daily living tasks
  • Behaviour therapy for meltdowns, rigidity and social skills
  • Special education to support learning and school readiness
  • Guidance for parents to continue practice at home
  • Psychiatric review for sleep, attention or anxiety, with medication only when needed and discussed with you first

When is the right time?

If something worries you, it is fine to ask now rather than wait for school. Contact a doctor promptly if your child loses words or abilities, is not babbling or pointing by about 12 months, or has no single words by about 16 months. Early help gives children more time to develop communication and confidence.
