Signs parents in Vijayawada often notice

Every autistic child is different, and no single sign means a child is autistic. These are common reasons parents first come to us:

  • Few or no words for their age, or words that were used and then stopped
  • Not turning when you call their name, or rarely pointing to show you something
  • Playing alone most of the time and finding it hard to join other children
  • Lining up toys, spinning objects, hand flapping or rocking
  • Strong distress when routines change, even small ones
  • Covering ears at everyday sounds, or refusing many foods or clothes

How ICGC assesses autism

An autism assessment is not one test. The team gathers your child's developmental history, watches how your child plays and communicates, and uses standardised assessment tools such as ISAA, CARS, ADOS and Conners, among others as applicable. Teachers' observations are included where possible, with your consent.

Because autism can occur alongside ADHD, anxiety, sleep difficulties or speech delay, the psychiatrist also looks at these, so the plan covers the whole child rather than a single label.

What happens at the first visit

At the first consultation a specialist listens to your concerns, asks about pregnancy, milestones, health and family routines, and spends time with your child. Bring any earlier reports, hearing test results and school feedback you have. You will leave knowing whether a full assessment is recommended and what it involves. Each appointment is typically 45 minutes, and you do not need a referral.

The full assessment usually takes one or two visits, after which the team explains your child's strengths and needs and gives you a written plan.

What therapy may include

The plan depends on your child. It may include some of the following, with goals reviewed regularly together with you:

  • Speech and language therapy for understanding, words, gestures or picture-based communication
  • Occupational therapy for sensory sensitivities, motor skills and daily routines like eating and dressing
  • Behaviour therapy for meltdowns, rigidity and turn-taking
  • Special education support for learning and school readiness
  • Parent guidance, so you can practise strategies at home between sessions
  • Psychiatric review for sleep, attention or anxiety, with medication only if needed and always discussed with you first

When to seek an assessment

If you have a concern, it is reasonable to ask early. You do not need to wait for a school to raise it. Please contact a doctor promptly if your child loses words or skills they already had, does not babble or point by around 12 months, or has no single words by around 16 months. Early support gives children more time to build communication and confidence.

What parents say about ICGC Vijayawada

“I am extremely happy with the progress my son has made at ICGC Therapy Centre. When we first started, he had a lot of anger, hyperactivity, behavioural difficulties, and speech delay. Managing him was very challenging for us. After receiving regular therapy at ICGC, we have seen a remarkable improvement in his behaviour, communication, and overall development. He is much calmer, more manageable, and has made good progress in his daily activities. I would especially like to appreciate his Occupational Therapist, Mr. Subrata Borah, for his patience, dedication, and understanding. He puts in a lot of effort and works with my son with great care and consistency. His approach has made a very positive difference in my son’s progress. I would also like to sincerely appreciate Mr. Rahul, his Speech Therapist, for his remarkable patience and dedication towards the children. He works with great care, encouragement, and consistency, always making the therapy sessions comfortable and engaging. I am truly grateful to the entire ICGC Therapy Centre team for their support and guidance. I would definitely recommend ICGC to parents looking for a supportive and caring therapy centre for their child.”
