Autism Assessment and Therapy for Children in Sakinaka and Chembur, Mumbai

Autism assessment and therapy for children at ICGC Sakinaka and Chembur, Mumbai: psychiatrist, psychologist, speech, OT and special education.

ICGC has two centres in Mumbai: one on Saki Vihar Road in Sakinaka, Andheri East, and one at Swastik Park in Chembur. Both help families who think their child may be autistic, from the first conversation through assessment and therapy. Choosing the centre closer to home, whether you live in the western suburbs or the eastern side of the city, keeps weekly therapy travel manageable.

Signs that bring Mumbai families to us

Autism looks different in every child, and one sign on its own does not mean a diagnosis. Parents commonly tell us about:

  • Delayed speech, or words that were used and then lost
  • Not looking up when called, and rarely pointing or waving
  • Difficulty playing with other children in the building or at playschool
  • Repetitive play such as lining up objects, or flapping and spinning
  • Distress over small changes in routine
  • Sensitivity to traffic noise, crowds, certain foods or clothing

How we assess autism in Sakinaka and Chembur

The assessment brings together your account of your child's development, careful observation of play and communication, and standardised tools such as ISAA, CARS, ADOS and Conners, among others as applicable. Where you agree, we include feedback from your child's teachers.

Many autistic children also have ADHD, anxiety, sleep difficulties or speech delay. The child psychiatrist looks at these as well, so the plan addresses your child's whole picture.

What to expect at the first visit

During the first consultation a specialist listens to what you have noticed, asks about pregnancy, milestones, health and daily routines, and spends time with your child. Bring previous reports, hearing tests and school notes if you have them. You will leave knowing whether a full assessment is recommended. Each appointment is typically 45 minutes, and you do not need a referral.

The full assessment usually takes one or two visits. The team then explains the findings and gives you a written plan.

Therapy that may be part of the plan

Goals are agreed with you and reviewed regularly. Your child's plan may include:

  • Speech and language therapy for understanding, speaking or alternative communication
  • Occupational therapy for sensory regulation, motor skills and everyday tasks
  • Behaviour therapy to reduce meltdowns and build flexibility
  • Special education for learning skills and school readiness
  • Parent training, so progress carries over at home
  • Psychiatric review for sleep, attention or anxiety, with medication only if needed and discussed with you first

When to seek help

Asking early is always reasonable. Please see a doctor soon if your child loses words or skills, is not babbling or pointing by around 12 months, or has no single words by around 16 months. The sooner support starts, the more time your child has to build communication and confidence.
