Why Hyderabad parents first get in touch

Concerns often surface at a preschool review, a paediatrician visit, or when a grandparent notices something. None of these signs alone means a child is autistic, but they are worth discussing:

  • Speech that is late, or words that appeared and then faded
  • Little eye contact, few gestures, or not responding to their name
  • Preferring to play alone and finding group play at school hard
  • Repeating movements such as flapping, spinning or rocking
  • Becoming very upset with changes to routine, routes or food
  • Strong reactions to noise, light, textures or crowded places

How the assessment works at ICGC Gachibowli

Assessment combines a detailed developmental history from you, structured observation of how your child plays, communicates and relates to others, and standardised tools such as ISAA, CARS, ADOS and Conners, among others as applicable. With your permission, the team also considers input from your child's school or daycare.

Autism frequently comes with other needs, such as ADHD, anxiety, sleep problems or speech delay. The psychiatrist checks for these too, so your child's plan reflects everything that is affecting daily life.

Your first visit

The first appointment is a conversation with a specialist about your concerns, your child's milestones, health, sleep and routines, along with time spent with your child. Please bring earlier reports, any hearing test results and notes from school. By the end you will know whether a full assessment is advised and what it involves. Each appointment is typically 45 minutes, and you do not need a referral.

After the assessment, which usually spans one or two visits, the team talks you through your child's strengths and challenges and gives you a written plan.

Therapy options in Gachibowli

Each plan is built around your child, with goals set and reviewed together with you. Depending on need, it may include:

  • Speech and language therapy, including gestures and picture-based communication where helpful
  • Occupational therapy for sensory needs, fine and gross motor skills, and self-care
  • Behaviour therapy for meltdowns, flexibility and social turn-taking
  • Special education to support learning and readiness for school
  • Parent coaching, so strategies continue at home
  • Psychiatric follow-up for sleep, attention or anxiety, with medication only when needed and discussed with you first

When to ask for an assessment

You do not need to wait for a teacher to raise a concern. Seek advice promptly if your child stops using words or skills they had, is not babbling or pointing by about 12 months, or has no single words by about 16 months. Starting support early gives children more time to grow in communication and confidence.
